Situation

Our client was a collaboration of 2 provincial Ministries and an existing health care research organization. The organization required strategic and operational plans to enable the establishment of a new industry wide organization designed to facilitate the development, commercialization and potential export of medical and assistive devices and technologies. The organization also required a business plan as a basis for soliciting and securing funding from various public and private sector sources.

Challenges

The main challenges we faced on this project included:

  • Developing a business model that would allow for a self-sustaining organization within a foreseeable time period
  • Developing a private-public sector collaboration model that would meet all needs and value systems
  • Dealing with the complexities of multi-stakeholder requirements
  • Developing concrete strategic and operational parameters from original concepts

Actions

To address these challenges, our consultants:

  • Worked with industry leaders and management staff in defining requirements
  • Collected available background and benchmarking information and data
  • Worked with industry and government representatives in developing a business model and strategic direction
  • Prepared a business plan and documentation material for presentation to relevant stakeholders

Results

At the conclusion of the project all the key success factors had been achieved, and the client was highly satisfied with the project deliverables and the value added by Schroeder & Schroeder Inc. Our actions resulted in:

  • Identification of industry sector collaboration, research, commercialization and export support needs
  • Identification of a strategic value add niche for the new organization
  • Development of a viable business model for the organization
  • A business plan for securing funding and for guiding the operations of the organization
